In this 3 day workshop you will work alongside textile sculptor Bryony Rose Jennings to create your own

small scale textile dog or fox sculpture. The Dog or Foxes we create will be in standing position, if you

would like to create sculpture of a specific breed please bring lots of reference pictures. We can seek

inspiration from real life, but this approach does not seek to emulate it perfectly – lots of artistic license

available here!

The first day begins with a short introduction from Bryony, giving you the opportunity to see her work

and find out about her creative practice and inspirations.

During the workshop you will be shown how to create your own pattern for the dog you would like to

make, we use this to create a soft body and then we use wire to create a sturdy base for the legs and

tail. We explore textile sculpting techniques; constructing a form, wrapping, layering, stuffing and

sculpting with stitch.

As the animals take shape, the magic starts to happen, and a personality begins to emerge. You will be

given lots of guidance to help you develop the character of your piece.

The finished sculptures will be approximately 10cm x 25cm x 30cm in size.

Students rarely fully complete their work within the duration of the course, but you will go home with a

fully formed animal and the knowledge needed to finish your work at your own pace.

ABILITY

This workshop is suitable for those with some hand-sewing experience who enjoy slow, immersive

making. Patience, curiosity and a willingness to experiment are key, with the most engaging results

often emerging through play, chance and discovery.

STUDENT MATERIALS LIST

Participants are invited to bring their own treasured fabrics, haberdashery and small found objects to

work with. Time-worn cloth, fragments of clothing, old linens or fabrics with a personal history can add

depth and meaning to a piece. Your fabrics can come in the form of small scraps or larger pieces. A

mixture of patterned fabrics, plain fabrics and a variety of textures will be helpful.

Think about the colour palette you might like to explore, this can be as eclectic or as uniform as you

wish.

Buttons, beads, trinkets or natural objects may also find new purpose as features or details. Working

with materials that already carry a story can enrich the making process, allowing each creature to

become not only a sculpture, but a quiet holder of memory and association.

I will bring a full range of needles but its always nice to have your own.

A selection of sewing needles, embroidery, darning and doll making

needles that are sharp, sturdy and long will be most useful. Curved quilting

needles can also be utilised for tricky areas.

My favourite needles to use for this scale of sculpture are hemline

long darners (size 3-5) or John James long darners size 003

Fabric scissors, and embroidery snips. (Handy to label these with your name so they don’t get mixed up)
