We 3 Sheep…..
A wool appliqué workshop with Sue Maddox
We 3 Sheep is a one day wool appliqué workshop, suitable for those with previous experience or for confident stitchers.
Wool appliqué using freezer paper, is an easy technique to learn & it is always fun to play with the beautiful colours of over dyed wools available from Cowslip.
This wool piece follows a Christmas theme, but could so easily be adapted to suit any season. It could become a wall hanging, table runner or simply be laid over a box or across a chair back.
You are welcome to make yours exactly like mine or take ideas from it & make it your own. You may have wools & fabrics at home that you would like to use, please bring them along. They will all look perfectly lovely. There will also be kits with similar wools & linen available to pre-order from Cowslip.
The day will no doubt be a busy one, but a whole lot of fun as well!
REQUIREMENTS
Background…approx 29”x14”. This can be any fabric of your choice, wool, linen, flannel, cotton etc. I used an over dyed BlackBerry Primitive linen in ‘Denim’ colour from Cowslip.
The final piece will measure approx 271/2” x 13”
Wools
. Scallops, top & bottom…27”x 3”. If you don’t have a long enough piece of wool, it is very easy to butt shorter lengths of wool together & it doesn’t have to be all the same colour. For mine I used Blackberry Primitives ‘Indigo’ wool.
. Sheep …each sheep can be cut from a piece 7”x 5”. I used 3 different off whites.
OR…if all your sheep will be the same colour, they can be cut from I/8 wool piece, approx 8”x 13”
. Grass strip & one of the winding vines…Pear wool approx 24”x 2”.
OR if you don’t mind joining to make enough length….1/8 wool piece
Greenery Swag
. Green 1, mistletoe leaves…1/8 wool piece
. Green 2, laurel leaves….1/8 wool piece
. Green 2, fir branches….1/8 wool piece
Second winding vine,
. Brown…1/8 wool piece,
OR use the Pear wool
Stars
. Yellow/ gold 5” square
Sheep Collars & Red Berries,
. Small scraps of red wool & for the berries you may like to use wool, beads or sequins or embroider them.
Mistletoe Berries
. Scraps of white wool, left overs from your sheep or small buttons.
Sheep Bells
. 3 small 10mm bells
You will also need to bring…
. 1 yard/ metre freezer paper, pencil & paper scissors
. Sharp fabric scissors for cutting wool
. Rotary cutter if you have one
. Threads…sewing threads loosely matching your wool colours. The finer they are, the more they sink into the wool & almost disappear. I use mostly Aurifil 80 or silk, but please bring whatever you already have.
OR …you may wish to use one colour thread for stitching all the wools, this looks lovely also, giving a more primitive look.
. Tacking thread
. Pins…white headed appliqué pins work best, but bring whatever you have.
. Needles… any you enjoy stitching with…ones that suit your chosen threads.
. Embroidery Threads…you may not need these on the day, but you may wish to experiment with them or discuss using them.
. 12”/ 30cm Ruler & a Tape Measure are both very useful.
