‘Wick Hollow’ – Di Ford
Workshop Information
The centre panel is Broderie Perse using a Toile fabric . We will deconstruct the toile fabric and re design it to make a fabulous new design to fit the 16 1/2″ square. This is then finished with an appliqué trim which will also be repeated in the outer border . Simple pieced blocks surround the appliquéd centre . Because of the simple colour scheme of the toile fabric it is perfect for a 2 colour quilt . A perfect 1 day class as well.
The inspiration for this quilt came from Mary Allen’s Quilt featured on page 46 of the book: “Quilts- California Bound, California Made 1840-1940” by Sandi Fox.
This quilt consists of a 16 ¾” finished Broderie Perse centre block, 20 8” finished pieced blocks and 16 half blocks. The blocks are separated by 1” finished lattice strips.
I have made this a 2 colour quilt . My Toile print was pink and brown so that decided what colours I chose . The requirements below allow for a 10” Toile border making the quilt 74” square when finished .
Fabric Requirements: These requirements do not allow for fussy cutting.
· 2.5 metres Toile print….for centre Broderie Perse and outside border
· 2 metres background fabric …..choose something that is similar in colour to the background of the Toile print. It will be used as the background for the centre block and the light print in the pieced blocks .
· Assorted prints for blocks- I prefer scrappy quilts with lots of different fabrics but choose similar colour value in each of the colours you choose to use, 20cm of printed fabric will make 3 blocks with leftovers for the half blocks
· Now you need 2 stripe fabrics that are similar but different. The first one requires 75cm for the “cross” that divides the pieced blocks …..these stripes are 1” wide finished. The second one is for the lattice strips between the blocks. This one requires 1metre……they are also 1” wide finished.
· 20cm for corner squares
· General sewing notions ……..sharp scissors , fine needles and pins , 100% cotton thread, templastic , scissors for cutting templastic , rotary cutter, ruler and board . We may have a time for machine piecing the pieced blocks in the afternoon so if you like you could bring your sewing machine .
