Trapunto & Corded Trapunto – Philippa Naylor
Workshop Information
Trapunto & Corded Trapunto
Learn how easy and versatile trapunto and corded yarn trapunto can be. Both fabulous ways of adding sculptural dimension to your work. Discuss material and equipment preferences, and gain insight into original and distinctive designs. After demonstrations students produce a small trapunto sample quilt using the techniques Philippa employs in her own work. Patterns are provided at a small charge. There will be a choice of different patterns to accommodate different tastes and ability levels!
What you need to bring with you:
1. One quilt sandwich measuring 24” square. This should be made with low loft wadding (batting). The fabric is best if it is a pale colour with any design being subtle. We will be transferring a design from printed paper to the fabric by placing the fabric on top of the paper – so please check that your fabric is not so dense or dark that this is not possible. Thank you! No need to tack or pin this sandwich.
2. Two additional 24” square pieces of wadding (polyester, wool, bamboo or any other wadding/batting if you already have).
3. A small selection of machine sewing threads. Please bring threads that are self coloured and threads that contrast with your fabric. Shiny rayon and embroidery polyester both look nice in machine work.
4. ‘Scotch’ or ‘Sellotape’ or a glue stick.
5. A reel of water soluble thread.
6. Quilter’s safety pins and straight pins.
7. Small sharp scissors. These are very important for this technique.
8. Quilt marking pencil or pens (washable type).
9. Sewing machine, all your feet and machine accessories, your slide on table and an extension cord. You will have the option of using regular straight stitch or free-motion sewing techniques, and can combine the two if you wish. If you have a straight stitch plate and a knee bar please bring these too.
10. Sewing machine needles. Please bring a fine needle for use with the water soluble thread.
11. Free-motion foot if you want to include free-motion work. The open-toe style is best.
12. Straight stitch foot.
13. Zipper foot and/or open toe satin stitch foot.
14. Long ruler and/or large square.
15. Hand sewing needles.
16. Notebook and pens.
17. A few sheets of paper and scissors for cutting paper.
Optional. Teflon free motion slider mat (‘Supreme Slider’ or similar). Chunky knitting yarn. Butter muslin/cheesecloth. Large eye tapestry needle. Fabric weights.
Please contact me with any questions. I’d be very happy to hear from you.
