Staffordshire Appliqué
Mandy Pattullo is known for her use of antique quilts as a base for her much of her textile collage and in this applique and embroidery workshop you will have the opportunity to work on to a piece of patchwork to build up a folk art style design based on a pair of Staffordshire ware ornaments.
Wally Dogs were popular in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Made in Staffordshire they were usually displayed at either end of a mantelpiece. There were of course cats as well! Mandy’s daughter Alice Pattullo has drawn these collectables and these were the starting point for the textile interpretation. You will create a pair (or one if you prefer) using traditional applique techniques and stitchery. Your base will be a piece of antique patchwork which Mandy will supply at an additional cost of £5 per student (payable to Mandy on the day). Mandy will bring with her other inspirational examples . The techniques and build up will be clearly demonstrated and you can take away a basic template so that you could recreate more at home if you wished with your own materials.
Students to bring:
Sewing kit – scissors, pins, needles
Neutral sewing thread – ecru colour
A fat quarter or a pale predominantly cream fabric for the “china”: element. I usually use something with some print on it but it must be pale. Often I turn it over and use the back.It could be vintage but must be a patchwork weight cotton. The shop at Cowslip is full of suitable fabrics so if on the day you need to you can nip out and buy something.
Some scraps of browns and blacks for ears and tails, again cotton fabrics
Embroidery threads including a dark brown ,black.
Mandy will provide a piece of antique patchwork for you to work on at £5 per student though of course you can bring your own. The patchwork may vary from the photographs shown.
