Rag Rugging – Tricia Warman

Workshop Information

Price: £47.50

Rag rug making has been practiced in one form or another for centuries, but there now seems to be an exciting resurgence.  It is essentially a ‘thrift craft’ using old fabrics and clothing, and the workshop today will demonstrate the ‘hook’ method of ragging.

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS

Frame – an old picture frame, quilting/embroidery hoop or something purpose-made
Hessian (sometimes known as burlap)
Hook – there are specially made hooks available, but I find that a crochet hook with a handle works very well
Staple gun or drawing pins, to attach the hessian to the frame (staples are stronger)
Thin card for template
Scissors and permanent black marker pen
A variety of fabrics cut into 1cm wide strips of any length.  It is a good idea to sort fabrics roughly into colours. Old t-shirt material is good, but cut thicker fabrics slightly thinner than 1cm
