Poppies on Parade! – Janice Gunner

Workshop Information

Course Type: Workshop
Instructor: Janice Gunner
Duration: 1 Day
Price: £55.00

Who can resist Poppies, they are my favourite flower. This quilt, designed and made in 2012 has had repeated requests to be a workshop. In a departure from my usual style it is a whole cloth, the poppies applied to the fabric using fabric paint. A one-day workshop will show you how to cut the stencils, apply the poppies on a sample and the actual piece and begin free machine stitching in the details on the sample. Two days allows progression to the main piece of work. Paint application, free machine embroidery/quilting and finishing techniques will be demonstrated and discussed.

Student Requirements
Please bring the following materials and equipment with you:
½ metre of light blue fabric for the background (the paints will not work on dark colours)
½ metre wadding – I use Hobbs Heirloom (80% cotton & 20% polyester)
½ metre backing fabric
505 adhesive spray or safety pins to layer your quilt
Sewing machine with free motion facility, free motion foot and instruction book!
1 reel each of red, black and golden yellow thread (cotton or rayon machine quilting thread)
Green fabric, ribbon or knitting yarn (this is for the stems)
Rotary cutter, mat, ruler and craft knife
Freezer paper for stencils
Masking Tape
Plastic cover for the table and some newspaper to lay wet fabric on to
Water pot and Rubber gloves
Hairdryer (to speed up drying the paint)
I will provide the fabric paint and bring some small natural sponges and paint brushes for the class to use.
Please note: you will make a small sample first before printing and stitching the actual piece. This sample will also be used to practice the free machine stitching. You may not actually start your larger piece in class, it all depends how quickly you work!
