Patchwork Waistcoat or Jacket
Workshop Information
Ever since the sewing bee there has been interest in making a patchwork jacket or waistcoat, something I did as a class years ago and sadly I gave all the samples away, so now it’s up for new… with Bec and me.
This photo is a design made by a student Pru.
On the first day we will concentrate on constructing a piece of patchwork fabric either just squares or something more random, you can also take a copy of our pattern, which will be an edge to edge simple jacket with a binding finish and patch pockets, or supply your own you will then have time to work on the fabric before the second day, when you can cut out the jacket and start construction.
Requirements
Random selection of fabrics enough to make at least 1.5m of fabric, but we can slightly shape the pieces to avoid waste, although years ago I made a teddies waistcoat from the leftover and a xmas tree quilt!!!
A mixture of patterns big and small choose one fabric with several colours and match to it., this helps you start choosing
You could use a jelly roll, charm pack or layer cake which would speed up the process of cutting and add some extra fabrics, recycled denim with cotton shirting or just choose fat q’s
You could precut 3.5” or 4.5” squares or even smaller just remember the smaller the longer to piece together, you can combine rows of squares with strips to speed up
You could start by pre cutting 100 – 150 squares of your choice before the class and you need to bring a flannel or sheet to lay out the design on ready for piecing
