Jo’s Washed & Worn Patchworking Class

Workshop Information

Price: £79.00

Washed and worn or vintage looking quilts are always my favorite, plus daisies so this is a combination of everything, you can choose one of the existing quilt patterns or use them and modify to your own taste, I am designing a new daisy type quilt which will be on a pieced background with buttons and stitched work embellishment, but all the older daisy pattern and ideas will be available.
Below I have listed three ideas, but I have many ideas including a summer tea party wallhanging and lots of other appliqué ideas like daisies in jugs etc which we are working on now, the main thing is that you can use up small pieces of fabric and vintage, come with an open mind and bring your scrap bag if you are not sure.
1. I have designed a new Quilt with a central basket appliquéd onto a pieced background, made of old bits and pieces sewn together which is 48” approx square, this then has a 2.5” finished stripe border then an outer border of old rosy fabric but again this could be made of bits, the whole feel is meant to be “comfortable country” with an eye to using your fabric stash.  Either use bonded appliqué or needle turn.
2.  A pieced alternative is using 3.5” and 2” cut squares piece on the diagonal and finish with a wide border, this is an excellent way to use up millions of small pieces just start cutting the 2 sizes and put in a bag and then piece 4 patch squares and then lay out in organized random design.
3.  Or since my trip to Scandinavia I have made  a new  Grey /beige/ browney quilt  using French General type materials it will look like an antique frame quilt with a central star and then borders, the colours to suit the student. Another star type quilt is also in the pipeline, one just seems to lead to another and it’s a good way of using UP!!!
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS

Basic sewing kit, to include Golden Eye appliqué needles, scissors, threads, etc
Sewing machine with ¼” foot and open toe 20 for appliqué as option to hand appliqué
Rotary cutting set (if available), paper & fabric scissors, threads to match fabrics
Tracing paper or layout pad, if wishing to alter basic design
Quilt 1.  Old washed clothing like check shirts old embroidered table clothes, bits of lace and some soft linens can all be incorporated,( enough to make 48” square)
Selection of colours fat q’s size for leaves, stems and flowers
If wishing to make a central basket you will need approx. 50” of either calico or subtle pattern, or we will show you how to put lots of pieces together to make a pieced background this block can be used centrally or off centre, and be surrounded by smaller appliqué blocks and bits of lace and old linen etc, bits of ticking or you can follow a more formal design with pieced borders.

Quilt 2 A wide selection or 3.5” and 2” squares cut the more the better can be multi coloured or a limited amount of colours to suit student but this is a very good way of using up small bits, you will need approx 2.5m for the border but again it could be pieced, to use up stash.
Quilt 3  Approximately 5m in total  including 2m of main fabric and 1m of a darker tone and then 1m of darker contrast for stars, you could use a plain calico as background  or lots of different but same value pale fabrics . I am using all mergey patterns but subtle, this quilt will lend itself to nice traditional feather or floral quilting.
Quilting and wadding will be discussed and patterns available,

I don’t want the requirements to sound vague but I also want you to use all your bits and pieces and have fun so bring anything you like and we will sort!!!  All the ideas are open to you changing them however you like.
