Christmas Birds and Hearts and Baskets

Make a simple “Folksy” style quilt or wallhanging, suitable for beginners or the more experienced. Incorporate simple appliqué, using flannel fabrics and buttons and perhaps hang it on a twig? Ideal as a gift or as the start of a new Christmas quilt collection! I have used my angel pattern and made a larger quilt or could it be a table cloth with holly and berries around the edge, but this is more of a long term project.
 
 
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS

Basic sewing kit to include: paper and fabric scissors, pins, sewing threads to match or grey or colour to blend with all, for piecing, also to match your appliqué fabric
Sewing machine in good working order with instruction book
Tracing paper, template card, fine black felt pen, Pritt stick or glue
Pencils and note book
Fabrics: You will need approximately .50cms for the background – this can be all one fabric, but could also be a selection of stripes and checks pieced together to make up a background.  Something like stars either night or day sky colour – this is most applicable if you are doing an angel flying through the sky. You will also need small pieces for your appliqué hearts and birds. I usually tend to use folksy colours, warm for the winter, but you could use say blue and white stripes as background and then blue batiks for birds and hearts if you prefer a lighter look. If you wish to stick to more non-Christmas, with autumnal hearts and pumpkins etc, then the following is applicable: black fabric for birds and rustic fabrics for scarecrow man, string and thread if available. 
Stayflex, if you have it, for quick appliqué or Bondaweb if you prefer – this will be available so don’t worry too much
Wadding/backing approx. .50cms of either cotton or poly 2oz, if you are making a small hanging hopefully you should finish on the day
Quilting threads: cotton perlé or Guterman or even stranded is OK for small runs
Button jar and any available threads for quilting with biggish stitches. Buttons can be used for stars or flowers, also little music notes etc.
