Altered Textiles and Slow Stitching

After completing her Fashion/Textile degree, award winning designer Angela Hope worked as a lingerie designer for many leading brands and taught in Bristol, Manchester and Nigeria before moving to Ireland to establish handbag brand Hope & Benson. Later living in Italy & France she now splits her time between her Cornish studio cabin and French atelier.
Specialising in ‘altered textiles’ and slow stitching, Angela uses antique French ‘tattered’ items and textile fragments to create unique pieces.
The Workshop
Angela will encourage students to adopt a relaxed, free style of stitching, applying tiny scraps of vintage and antique fabrics to create a unique textile art piece.
Students are encouraged to bring a vintage or antique ‘piece’ that has meaning to them, as timeworn as possible. Or, they can acquire a piece from a charity shop. Angela will provide suitable pieces for purchase if they do not have one.
We will start the day with a brief introduction and examples of Angela’s work, aiming to inspire. This will be followed by a quick exercise to get used to working free form, without a hoop, being instinctive with placement of fragments and stitch lines.
We then move on to the main piece.
Requirements:
Students are encouraged to bring a small object to work on. This could be a child’s garment or something else personal to them. Or find something they like in a charity shop. It’s preferable to keep the item small. Plus a selection of embroidery threads, buttons etc. that they wish to use.
Alternatively, vintage and antique French project packs will be available at a cost of £10 per student, payable to Angela on the day.
Other French haberdashery items will also be available to purchase from Angela at a subsidised price.
In addition, students should bring
Dressmaking shears & embroidery scissors.
