Applique by hand is when you cut out a piece of fabric to applique down including a small 6mm turn, you use small applique needles and turn under using matching thread

Bonded applique is fixed with a hot iron is a little stiffer and needs to be either hand or machine top or blanket stitched to secure.

Patchwork is sewing pieces together with a 1/4” or 6mm seam

Quilting is putting the top quilt wadding and backing into a sandwich and holding it together either with machine or hand stitches.

A linear metre is 2m long but only half a width wide so it only costs 1metre

A long quarter is 25cms cut straight across the bolt from selvedge to selvedge

A fat quarter is 1m cut into four hot x bun fashion

We can recommend books and will try and help if you are too far away to visit, there is a short film on Channel 4/Kirstie how to make  a patchwork quilt.
