Machine Applique Masterclass – Philippa Naylor

Workshop Information

Price: £110.00

A practical workshop exploring an exciting range of machine applique techniques. You will begin by making a small range of samples to practise the techniques. These include raw-edged, satin stitch, turned edge and blind hem stitch applique. You will also learn how perfect satin stitch and turned edge circles are sewn, how to make and apply bias cut stems and how to produce outstanding sharp points. Following this you will be given a pattern for a small applique quilt top which can be used as is, adapted or totally redesigned depending on your taste and desire for experimentation! Throughout the two days Philippa will demonstrate the techniques, share a wealth of information on materials, equipment and personal techniques and answer all the quilt related questions you can think of.
Suitable for all levels.
Student Requirements    1.    Background fabric of 100% cotton. This can be light, medium or dark. Plainer fabrics work best. Minimum 70cm (28”) square.    2.    From your stash a small selection of fat quarters and scraps of 100% cotton fabric. These can be plains, prints and batiks, but should contrast with your background fabric so they will show up. You can also add a few novelty fabrics and trims which are not 100% cotton if you wish. Add scraps for samples including a piece of batik fabric.    3.    A small selection of sewing threads. 40 weight rayon or polyester threads are useful for satin stitch. These can tone or contrast with your fabrics so bring along a variety of what you have in your thread stash. Please also bring an ordinary polyester thread (Guttermans or similar).    4.    1 metre/yard of medium weight interfacing, fusible on one side. I suggest ‘Vilene’ or ‘Pellon’ type product which is used in dressmaking.    6.    Small piece of double sided fusible such as ‘Steam a seam 2’.    7.    Rotary cutter and mat.    8.    Scissors for paper and fabric.    9.    Hand sewing needles.10.    Sewing machine needles to match your chosen threads.11.    Scotch/Sellotape tape.12.    A4 plain paper, notepad and pencils.13.    Long quilters’ ruler and 1” x 6” quilters’ ruler.14.    Extension cord.15.    Sewing machine with slide on table and knee bar if you have one. A straight stitch plate is useful too.16.    Sewing machine feet: quarter inch foot, open-toe satin stitch foot, free-motion foot (open-toe style is best).17.    Pins.18.    Glue stick.19.    Half metre of ‘Stitch and Tear’ type stabiliser.
