Workshop Information
This five days will be spent starting with planning a story housey type quilt, mine will have spring in mind!! The quilt can be as simple or as complex as you like, but choosing colours types and textures of fabric to tell the story, designing the blocks, machine piecing, hand and machine quilting, to include hand and machine applique if required. You can copy my design adapt or make your own, it is hard to finish a quilt unless very small but you will get well into the project and learn new techniques and tips.
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS
Either approx. 1.5 – 2.0 metres background fabric like calico (if you would like your background all matching) or a selection of off-white, tea dyed, calico, linen or small print calico, to build up as you go. For my spring on the farm quilt I used all different linen backgrounds but you could use different blues or what ever you prefer.
Selection of oldie reds, brown, plaids and checks for buildings, houses, barns etc, possibly different colour for roof and house, mix and match.
Fabrics for trees and fields, flowers, water or what ever applicable to your quilt design, plaids checks are really good and even fine cord works well for ploughed field, the back of checks sometimes works well for windows.
It is hard with the fabric until you do the design but try and bring as much scrap as possible for the odd bird, boat, car, cider press or whatever might turn up!!
Basic sewing kit – tracing paper, pens, pencils, black felt pen, etc
Roll of imperial graph paper (available from Bricknells, Launceston, Bodmin)
Embroidery threads, that you have already
Photos of house or children or whatever you would like to use.
Sewing machine much quicker for piecing (optional), as can all be hand sewn
