‘Phebe’ – Di Ford
Workshop Information
Starting with the central applique block , students would be shown how to fussy-cut fabric for applique shapes, in essence how to make the fabrics do all the work. It will give them a lot more choices when purchasing their fabric as they will look at their fabric in a different way. Also it will include how i get the antique look in my quilts.
(For Phebe the first and 3rd requirements on the list for the centre block are needed.)
Also for both classes students will need the following…..
*Scissors…. whatever size suits you best but they must be SHARP right
to the point.
*Fine needles and cotton thread to blend with applique fabrics
*Template plastic…. transparent plastic like Mylar or whatever you
prefer using.
* Marking pens or pencils to finely mark right side of fabric.
*Rotary cutter, ruler and board for cutting background fabric.
* Notepad and pen
PHEBE FABRIC REQUIREMENTS
This is most definitely a scrap quilt so fabric requirements are a guide only. If you run out of one just add more in similar colours. This is how I worked, adding new fabrics regularly, (very regularly! Any excuse for some new fabric!!) I probably used at least 100 different fabrics. Colours I chose were reds (including pink), browns, teal blues and golds. The only greens were the leaves but even these were a very yellowy, mustard green.
Obviously you can use any colours you like but just restrict yourself to about 4 different colours so that it doesn’t get too messy. (I don’t mean just four fabrics but 4 colours then as many shades of the same colour as you like).
2 metres main background for all background in central 39 ½” central panel and the balance used throughout in pieced background.
Variety of similar colour fabric to main background and some quite busy light prints for balance of pieced backgrounds. Fat 1/8ths would be great.
Variety of prints for appliqué and pieced work in your colour choice. Lots of fat 1/8ths or bigger if you absolutely love the fabric.
