‘Rotherfield Grey’s’ Di Ford Quilting Workshop

Workshop Information

Price: £55.00

The inspiration for this quilt came from a quilt discovered during a Quilt Documentation Day by the Quilters Guild Heritage Search in Grove Oxfordshire. Ref. “Quilt Treasures” pages 33, 34 and 35. Unfortunately nothing is known about the provenance of the quilt.
I just love the “busyness” of this English style frame quilt. In fact in 2005 Primarily Patchwork did it as a “Border of the Month”- everyone else was doing blocks of the month so we tried something a little different. There are so many different fabrics in this quilt, it was absolute heaven!
For this version of the quilt I changed a few things and added my love of broderie perse. I hope you love the quilt as much as I do.
I used quite low contrast prints in faded reds, browns and teals- that does seem to be my favourite colour scheme!!   It is the ultimate scrap quilt. I will give the quantities for the larger pieces but the rest are literally scraps. If you belong to a fabric club, all these little bits of fabric would be great.
Interestingly the backing of the original quilt is also pieced as a frame quilt. I just happened to have enough of a Judy Rothermel reproduction print “cheater” fabric for the backing so my backing is as busy as the front.
I chose the name Rotherfields Greys as Rotherfield is a village in Oxfordshire, Greys refers to historical manorial land of the de Grey family. It sounds wonderfully English.
FABRIC REQUIREMENTS:

85cm for background centre block and applique cable border
Fabric suitable for broderie perse in centre. I also used areas of the same fabric to “fussy” cut the 6 pointed stars. (I have enclosed a photocopy of the fabric I used). I used the better part of 1.50m for mine but the quantity will vary depending on the print
Fabrics to fussy cut for hexagons in centre
25cm for appliqued scallop border around centre
65cm for darker teal border around the centre. I prefer to cut my borders down the true straight- the length of the fabric. If you are happy to cut them across the width then 30cm would be sufficient
30cm each of 2 fabrics for bias cable (Frame 1)
1.2m fabric for background of hexagons (Frame 3) Also for this border I inserted a 3/4” finished strip from a border stripe to form a line down the centre of the border
75cm background of zig zag (frame 5)
1.9m of a border stripe for Frame 7. Choose something that has some lightness in it as it is between the darker borders. The Frame is 2” finished. If you are happy to join the strip less fabric would be required
90cm for background squares of stars in Frame 8.
Then lots of scraps for:

Chevrons- Frame 2
Hexagons- Frame 3
Half square triangles- Frame 4
Zig zags- Frame 5
Churn dash- Frame 6
Triangles- Frame

This quilt has a central medallion of Fussy Cut hexagons surrounded by a Broderie Perse design then, in typical English Frame Style , lots of pieced borders showing students how easy it is to use lots and lots of different fabrics.
(For Rotherfield Greys just the fabric for centre and the cable border which are listed in the first 6 requirements on the list.
Also for both classes students will need the following…..
*Scissors…. whatever size suits you best but they must be SHARP right
to the point.
*Fine needles and cotton thread to blend with applique fabrics
*Template plastic…. transparent plastic like Mylar or whatever you
prefer using.
* Marking pens or pencils to finely mark right side of fabric.
*Rotary cutter, ruler and board for cutting background fabric.
* Notepad and pen
