Perfect Pockets
Essential skills to use in all your garment sewing – from simple everyday clothing to wearable art to creative couture.Explore and make samples of a range of pockets in different fabrics suitable for a range of garments. Unlined patch pockets for shirts, blouses and summer dresses. Lined patch pocket for jackets and coats. In-seam pocket for skirts and dresses. Welt pockets for tailored outerwear. The day will be invaluable in helping you achieve success with your garment sewing. You will be inspired to develop your skills further and to continue making high quality individual garments that you will be proud to wear!
What you need to bring with you:
1.     Sewing machine and extension cord. Please be sure to bring your machine slide on table and knee bar if you have one. A straight stitch plate is also useful.Also bring your accessory box with all of your feet and your sewing machine manual. This is important. You might also want to give your machine a clean and oil if this is not something you do regularly!
2.    Three different fat quarters of cotton fabric.
3.    Two fat quarter sized piece of light to medium weight wool or wool mix fabric that is not too
loosely woven.
4.    A small piece of lining fabric.
5.    A range of sewing thread to include some general purpose polyester thread and tacking thread.
I like to use Superior Threads ‘Bottomline’ 60 weight polyester thread for sewing welt pockets.
6.    Rotary cutter and cutting mat.
7.    Ruler minimum 12” long.
8.    Fine straight pins.
9.    A tape measure.
10.  Fabric shears
11.   Scissors for paper cutting
12.  Scissors for thread snipping.
12.  Sewing machine feet: quarter inch foot, general sewing foot, zigzag foot.
13.  Tailors chalk.
14.  Small amount of light weight fusible interfacing (Vilene or Pellon type).
15.  A water spritzer.
16.  Paper, notebook and pens.
17.  Portable ironing surface and iron if available (not everyone will need their own).
