Paper Litho Printmaking
Workshop Information
Paper litho (AKA as gum arabic transfer)
This very accessible form of litho printmaking uses photocopies to print from, giving you the chance to reproduce a range of printed matter onto different surfaces including fabric and clay, with or without a printing press. You will be taken through each stage of the process step by step, thought how to layer different images successfully, and will make many prints, that can be used in future stitching projects.
Paper litho
Also known as Gum Arabic transfer, is a form of lithography, so is all about the resist quality of oil and water, (which is why all photocopies must be oil based and not home printers’ water-based copies).
The photocopy is your plate, so can be printed in any colour you chose.
It is a very simple method that does not need a lot of equipment and can be used on many different surfaces and does not need a press to print.
Each photocopy can only be used once
Materials
I will provide all materials needed to make prints including images (photocopies), which will include abstract mark making, printed words and other found imagery. There will be a cost of £5 payable to Sophie on the day.
But if you would like to bring you own images to print from they must be: –
1)Photocopies of laser print NOT ink jet printer images (home printer).
2) Black and white prints with NO grey scale (as this is inked with toner and will print solid), drawing and etchings that use cross hatching create tone work well.
3) Remember your images will print back to front, so should be reversed on photocopy if this is important to the final image e.g. words.
For those wanting to print on material I can provide some sheeting, but if you want anything fancier, please bring it yourself, cut into A4 size pieces and ironed.
